An Aeromexico B737 Embraer 190 was written off today as it crash-landed nearby Durango’s Airport just after takeoff. The plane tried to take off in the middle of an " intense storm with hail” Or at least Animal politico reports it this way.
According to the Governor of Durango, there are no casualties to be reported. If memory serves me right, this is the second Aeromexico plane to crash in the last fifty years.

I saw reports that the pilots tried to abort the takeoff.

How? it’s 6 miles away from the airport... Maybe misjudged V1?

“We need to abort the takeoff!”
“But we passed rotation speed!”

Yeah, it makes more sense.

What would prompt an aborted takeoff in this circumstance?
![]() 07/31/2018 at 18:51 |

Any number of things. Fuel leak, deflating tire, etc
![]() 07/31/2018 at 18:53 |

Well, lets hope it was pilot error due to misjudging speed and not a design flaw of the jet.

Perhaps, but fixing the jet is easy.

Well, yeah, but it means unsafe planes flew for years without anyone noticing. We’re luck there’s been no casualties.
But again, it’s very probably pilot error. I just wonder how this ends.

If there were a design flaw with the aircraft such that highly proficient pilots were crashing in spite of their best efforts, then ERJs would be falling like rain. But they aren’t, so my money is on some sort of mechanical issue, bird strike, pilot error, etc.

It was pilot error. Tried to take off in a hail storm.

Officials say 85 people were injured but there were no fatalities in the crash this afternoon of Aeroméxico flight 2431 shortly after it took off from the Guadalupe Victoria airport in Durango.
The Embraer 190 aircraft had 97 passengers and four crew on board and was bound for Mexico City.
It crashed about 10 kilometers from the Durango airport at about 3:20 this afternoon.
Some passengers were reported to have made their way to a nearby highway to seek aid.
Sources at Aeroméxico said weather conditions were poor when the flight took off, with heavy rain and hail.
One report said the pilot attempted but failed to abort the takeoff.
A bad choice by the pilot, but who cleared the takeoff?

It’s a small airport 400k pax/year , Aeromexico is (I think) the only airline to fly such a small jet there, others use A320s and B737s.. .but not often. Also, bad weather in Durango is kind of an oddity. Maybe the controller thought the tiny 190 could handle weather like the bigger ones.
Can’t see any cargo ops, but if there are, big cargo jets could probably handle it without issue too.

I just gonna celebrate the win that all onboard survived.

An E190 can handle about anything that a 737 can handle.
“ bad weather” is too generic- amd at this early stage, 7 0% of the reports you hear turn out to be wrong.
Just glad no one was killed - the investigation will figure out what went wrong.

Yeah, it’s generic. But lets see what happens, this investigation might be useful! most of the fuselage wasn’t consumed by flames. Thankfully non of this investigation cost any lives... yet, the injuries are worrisome.

They’ll get the black box and all that - and will be able to interview the crew, which is awesome. They’ll get everything they need to assess it quickly.
Prayers that the injured heal fully and quickly.

It’s an old ERJ, any design flaw that catastrophic would have been discovered a long time ago. :O
Now, poor maintenance or a failure could be a factor.

Reading this on an airplane... just landed!

Poor maintenance on Aeromexico?
No way jose.

You’d think in 9500ft of runway, you’d have time for a go/no-go decision. Will be interesting to see what
the weather situation was

It’s starting to sound like it might have been a microburst.

U pdated info has it just a couple hundred yards off the end of the runway - looks like those folks used up all the good luck on the planet today. Hope the pilot pulls through.

still could’ve ended up a lot worse.
